Movie Review "Country Strong" Fails To Impart A Compelling Story

A film meant to be a dramatic masterpiece based in the Nashville Country Music scene turns out to be a facade of the real stories depicted in downtown Nashville every day.  The dull same ole, same ole run of the mill story of an artist battling drug & alcohol addiction post-rehab too soon, doesn't give the same dark twisted introspection as "Walk the Line" & "Crazy Heart".  The primary roles that Gwyneth Patlrow (Kelly Canter) & Tim McGraw (James Canter) play are intertwined in the lives of upcoming stars, Garrett (Heldlund) & Chiles (Meester) , which do not add to the story's intensity but rather distract the viewer from one bad dialogue to another.

At the core of the movie, you can see what writer/director Shana Feste meant to do with the plot but instead tried to fulfill the Country Music stereotypes rather than satisfy the curious Nashville outsider to see what Nashville's Country Music Scene is on a daily basis.  Nashville is a city full of musical heritage & rich with diversity but instead Feste chose to limit Nashville's true history & point out an unconvincing mockery of the music industry without a trace of human dignity.  The main antagonist in the film are the actor's multiple affairs instead of a central character the audience can sympathize or hate.  If you do not require a movie to give you a strong plot with great dialogues then this movie is for you.  Ultimately "Country Strong" includes major Nashville icons including The Fontanel (Mandrell's previous home), Broadway Avenue venues such as The Stage, & the parking lot of LP Field, home to the Titans.

Garth Brooks Brings Down Nashville House With Video

After singer/songwriter Karyn Rochelle opened the show on the first of nine shows Garth Brooks is headlining in the Nashville Bridgestone Arena, the concert went right on schedule by 'delivering' Garth in a spaceship type vehicle down into the stage.  The Starman singer then proceeded to kick off the show with "Rodeo" & fired in to the tune "Papa Loved Mama". More guests appeared throughout the show including wife Trisha Yearwood who sang on their duet "In Another's Eyes," & instead of leaving the stage right after the performance, Garth asked the songstress to sing one of her own songs, to which she chose "She's in Love with the Boy". Also on the bill was Steve Wariner who performed with Garth on "Long Neck Bottle".

The normally comical Blake Shelton held an air of reverence on Saturday night's Opry show (10/23), the night of his induction. The 10 year Country Veteran opened up the Grand Ole Opry's show with performing his latest #1 song "All About Tonight" which also signified his feelings about the night. On top of the importance of the night itself, Blake was the 1st Induction after the Grand Ole Opry's Re-Opening from the flood damages last May. Traveling through the Opry now the changes are extravagant in depth & detail which blew away Blake & the entire artist community.  From the locker conversion from metal to wood, the hallways exude in elegance, even the walls have a classier more sophisicated design. Each dressing room does have a grand theme, & inside the wooden locker room, multiple quotes from artists on what the Opry Membership means to them can be seen. Fellow Oklahoman, Garth Brooks' quote is very similar to what Blake says down below in our Media Interview with him. Inside the Opry's Green Room (where artists are held before performances) there is an extravagant mural, & photos from over the years of the Opry shows as well as the mark of where the water had risen inside the Opry house.

Opry greats Jeannie Seely, Steve Wariner & Jean Shepard performed & supported the younger singer in his induction, but the most important artist Blake wanted to be there was Trace Adkins. Time & time again Blake told the Opry GM/Vice President Pete Fisher & the media who he wanted to ask & induct him into the Opry. Trace was equally touched as he delivered Blake's WSM Opry Vintage Mic Replica award with a wooden base from the original Opry stage.  The man of the hour was showered with praise from Trace Adkins, saying "This man is truly Country...him & his girlfriend dip from the same snuff..." Even though it was comical, there was deep sincerity in every word Trace had to say.  Trace & Blake performed their #1 together of "Hillbilly Bone" & both guys sang their hearts out, on their respective parts & range.  Trace also performed his songs as a solo act including his current single "This Ain't No Love Song" & the oldie but goodie "Every Light In the House is On," which the over 6 foot Country crooner perfected in his baritone vocals.  After Blake opened up the show, he was taken to the media backstage where we were able to ask him a few questions about the night & his feelings on the singer's 10 year old career.

Feels Like Injustice?

I normally do not publish topics of safety issues on this Blog; however, I wanted to address a problem & begin a discussion with other people who feel my pain.

Last month I was driving down a busy main road in Nashville, TN; unfortunately that morning I was blocked by a metro policeman in the middle of the turn lane in front of a major intersection light. He was on a motor bike & walking or standing in the middle of this busy lane.  I concluded he was directing traffic for an upcoming wreck, construction or some unforeseen problem...however, this was not one of those times.

I don't know if others feel this way, but I would like to know if you have been a victim of a power-happy policeman.  Police are suppose to be here to serve & protect but it seems these days they are here to take advantage of their power given to them by the city & use it only to meet a well-known 'quota'.

Here's my problem with this situation- if he was trying to capture the speeders coming down the road...why would you place yourself in the middle of morning traffic in order to 'capture' the so-called speeders...was he really using radar or taking advantage of his power, no matter the cost.

If you have had a similar problem- tell me about it, then complain to your local police station.  These scenarios can be prevented & you can turn the tables on these power happy figures...

Grammy Students Sing with Keith Urban

Click here: For Keith Urban Videos in Nashville
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (July 26, 2010) — On July 23 Keith Urban, three-time GRAMMY® Award winner and one of country music's most successful and influential artists, headlined the GRAMMY Foundation®'s signature benefit Starry Night concert at the LA Tennis Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Rising folk/rock stars the Avett Brothers opened the benefit. This event was presented in association with the Farmers Classic tennis tournament
presented by Mercedes-Benz, and was held three nights prior to the tournament's opening. Starry Night benefitted the GRAMMY Foundation's GRAMMY in the Schools® music education programs for high school students and the Southern California Tennis Association's foundation. As part of Urban's sold-out, two-hour concert, six GRAMMY Camp participants were called up to the stage to perform Urban's No. 1 hit "Days Go By." Katie Gavin of Winnetka, Ill., Savannah Meares of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Brenna Miles of La Canada Flintridge, Calif., sang background vocals, India Pascucci of Burbank, Calif., played drums, and guitarist Kristen Castro of Simi Valley, Calif., and violinist Kevin Schwarzwald of Pacific Palisades, Calif., were both featured with solos during the song. The crowd reacted with thunderous applause.

"Keith Urban's career is defined by both exceptional musicianship and extraordinary generosity," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy® and the GRAMMY Foundation. "And it is meaningful and moving that Keith lent his time and talents during the busy summer touring season in support of the GRAMMY Foundation and our GRAMMY in the Schools music education programs. We offer young people real-world experiences in the music industry and it doesn't get any more 'real' than having our GRAMMY Campers perform before a packed audience with Keith Urban. We were also delighted to have the Avett Brothers showcase their unique and powerful music at our Starry Night benefit."

"Having those kids onstage with us on Friday really serves as a reminder of what is possible when you're lucky enough to find your passion," said Urban. "I was so impressed by their talent and their obvious love for playing." The kids first met Urban onstage prior to the concert during his afternoon soundcheck, when he and his band worked with the campers to put the finishing touches on their performance.

"The Farmers Classic was again delighted to collaborate with the GRAMMY Foundation to help raise funds for this worthy charity," said Bob Kramer, Farmers Classic tournament director. "The Southern California Tennis Association and UCLA are extremely proud to be involved with such important causes and to provide a lively and entertaining kick off for the 84th annual Farmers Classic at UCLA."

Organized under the banner GRAMMY in the Schools, the GRAMMY Foundation's education programs include GRAMMY Camp® — held this year from July 10–19 at USC — as well as the GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles, GRAMMY Career Day, GRAMMY Signature Schools, and GRAMMY SoundChecks®. This year Urban served as GRAMMY Camp's honorary dean to affirm his commitment to the GRAMMY Foundation's music education programs.

NCC Album Reviews by Leslie Armstrong

The Reason Why, Capitol Records (Little Big Town) Hot off the airwaves with “Little White Church” is the staple Country group set to release a full compilation of tunes that evoke various emotions in different musical styles. There is a little bit of everything on this album including a tinge of Blues on the tune "Runaway Train" along with a more Traditional Country mix set in the lyrics of 'You Can't Have Everything." Phillip from the band was right in describing this followup album, releasing on Capitol records, as a new musical direction for the four part harmonic crew. This album is a definite must for your music collection. Release date is currently set for August 24th. Catch more news at www.littlebigtown.com

This Song is For You, Vanguard/Sugar Hill Records (Joey + Rory) The wife/husband duo took their inspirations from society and penned a tune of appreciation. The song includes guest vocals from the Zac Brown Band in a slow-down traditional Country melody with lyrics talking about the men and women working hard to keep this Country educated, protected, and running smoothly. The anthem-like message is simple yet to the point and has a nice rounded hook throughout the songs' entirety. You can download it for free now by visiting: www.joeyandrory.com/download

Top Down, Universal Republic (Fast Ryde)
Both James and Jody have fun with the music they make but it isn't the ordinary Country music you may hear as exampled in the synthesized track of "Top Down." The guys add a flair of current times trendy production with the infusion of traditional Country instruments such as the steel guitar and fiddle, combined with a very catchy hook. This summer mantra won't force its melody in to your head but it will breeze into your memory and encourage the want to sing along. You can find out more by visiting www.fastryde.com

Taylor Swift Fan Club Party:

Kenny Chesney Rocks with Steve Miller Band

When Kenny Chesney made the decision to not mount one of his high impact, NFL stadium-driven summer tours last August, it was in large part so that he could take the time he wanted to really enjoy the process of making a new studio record. While he has released the ocean-driven Lucky Old Sun, which yielded the multiple week #1s “Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven” and “Down The Road” with Mac McAnally, and his Greatest Hits II, which had the chart-topping “Out Last Night,” as well as “Ain't Back Yet,” the theme from his nationally-released Sony Motion Pictures “Kenny Chesney: Summer in 3D,” it has been almost three years since Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates, his last true studio release.

“I knew I wanted the record to be something more, something that took what I do in my special projects and weaved it into what I do for the mainstream,” Chesney says. “It takes a lot of energy and mental space to be on the road… and I kind of felt like - especially coming off of this second Greatest Hits - this next record should be something that set the stage for the next phase of my music, the same way No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems opened up the music I've made for the past 8 years.

“I came to town to write songs, to make records, to create something that spoke about how I lived, and the people who I knew who were just like me and my friends lived. I'd like to think we've captured that, just like I'd like to think that we've all come to realize that life is a little more complicated than maybe we thought. It's still fun. It's still intense. It's still about friends and dreams and all kinds of things, but there's something more, too.”

That something more is probably the best way to describe Hemingway's Whiskey, which will arrive in record stores Sept. 28. The album - which builds on many of Chesney's trademarks - pushes each thing further and in new directions, including the pensive Guy Clark title track.

“When I heard the song, I knew it was the perfect title for the record,” Chesney says. “I was sitting in my truck and a friend had given me Guy's album, which had just come out - and it's a song that talks about living life to its fullest, being a man about your responsibilities and not compromising. As soon as I heard it, I knew I had to cut it… and call the album that… because it says everything about the way you live your life, and what life can be if you refuse to buy into limits, which - as someone who's read all his books - is everything Hemingway's novels revolved around.”

While details are emerging slowly from the studio - beyond there will be guests, surprises and songs his audience can see their own lives in - Chesney has savored the time spent in the creative process. As he says, “There's something about getting inside songs, finding the keys and working with these amazing Nashville musicians that inspire and reminds me not just what a privilege making music is, but how important great songs can be in all
of our lives.”

Nashville Continues to Rise

The Nashville Rising show was full of respect & admiration for the Middle Tennessee Community. A diverse lineup of artists stepped up to the plate at Nashville's Brigestone Arena, thanks to the Event's originators Tim McGraw & Faith Hill. Miranda Lambert began her second song performance by stating 'Nashville has built the house that I love...which is Country music', then proceeded to play her second #1 song 'The House That Built Me'. Photo on Right: Jason AldeanDolly Parton was broadcasted from a pre-taped message giving her support of the community by saying 'Nashville Rising is just another way to say 'Love Thy Neighbor'. Other celebrities who gave their support by video were Nashville native Reese Witherspoon & Country friend Matthew McConaughey. The ACM Lifting Lives program gave $100,000 to the Community Foundation along with a plethora of various organizations/businesses including Sharpie, Nashville Predators, & BMI. Access Hollywood Correspondent Nancy O' Dell lead the presentations of donations; BMI's VP Jody Williams announced they would match any donations given to Community Foundation up to $50,000 from now until July 31st, so text "Rising' to 501501 now.Artists who gave their time in performance were Carrie Underwood, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montgomery Gentry, Blake Shelton with Trace Adkins, ZZ Top, Trace Adkins, Taylor Swift & many more. Julie Roberts gave the story of her personal losses from the Nashville Flood then performed a new ballad. Other surprises were the pre-taped talk show host Craig Ferguson giving his support for the Music City, Billy Ray Cyrus along with daughter Miley performing one after the other. Sandra Bullock came out & said a few words then tried to play the guitar jokingly then instead introduced Faith Hill's performance. For more Coverage Stay Tuned here at the NCC.
